For our readers who aren’t familiar with you, can you summarise yourself and what you play in a few sentences?
I love the magic we create as people gathering and feeling it on a dancefloor and I’m passionate about that being for everyone who gets it. I spend a lot of time teaching & supporting emerging fem & non binary artists or pushing for access to electronic music spaces & events to be more inclusive.
As a DJ I’m very slutty with genres- I just love to fuck around with nearly all of them. House can be used as an umbrella term, but I love bringing some jazz together with garage, salsa with techno, reggaeton, samba, drill, disco, the list goes on. Finding the little sound elements that I feel really wanna be together, regardless of genres or where in the world the sounds are from, gives me a high.
I enjoy that sweet spot where two (or three, or even four) tunes are warm enough yet hard enough to create a dancefloor you just simply can’t leave, and I can just get those tracks to make love to each other as I mix them. I kind of see it all as a very sexual energy in a way; the way you choose the right combinations of vibrations and make it feel so good, to give out those addictive ecstasy feels. Basically my DJ persona is feminist, yet pimp haha if I can say that. Pushing that sauciness in the music always.
Let’s get straight to the good stuff. If our readers wanted to listen to 5 tracks that describe your vibes, what are the 5 tracks you would offer up?
CAMZ – Respeita As Mina (Respect The Girls)
Mike Dunn, Mr 69 – Phreaky MF (or the new remix just out on Hot Creations – FMF, Viot & Vitor Vinter – so good, but I gotta give props to the original – I’ve played it a million times)
Michael Clies – La Mezcla (Toto La Momposina)
Moxy Edits 001
Tokischa, The Martinez Bros – Kilo
What is your favourite thing about DJing in 2023?
Being 40 now I’m loving dropping tracks that are from before some of the crowd were born, and them still absolutely losing it. Plus the open mindedness now with crossing over genres, just feels so comfortable- a kind of circle of sharing, an equal spiritual education within the dance floor-No one is more teacher nor more student, we’re all absorbing the magic from each other. I feel like it’s better than ever, nothing is out of bounds now.
What’s your least favourite thing about DJing in 2023?
Nothing, gimme more, I love it.
Okay. I need you to invent something for me that relates to the music scene. It can be a gadget, a tool, a product, a new law…. the world is your oyster. (Tip: Think about what dance music needs, or what you think is missing, and invent that)
Sometimes I get in a mood I don’t wanna be around my phone I just wanna be totally free – emerged in nature or a dance floor or something, and you know what happens as soon as I decide to leave my phone at home don’t you? I hear an insanely excellent can’t live without track! So I want to invent a shazam ring, or necklace, watch, with zero other functions, just track identification, no emails, texts or calls.
Coolest place you’ve ever played?
I played an amazing strip club once, super debaucherous, not your average, girls kind of flying above your head on swings, and they asked me to to hit the shower switch – I thought at first it would be some kind of light, but it was an actual shower on the stage, I was controlling the water on these girls from the DJ booth. Every few minutes some mostly naked girl would run up to the booth and tell me she loved me, so I was like oh hi I love you too! It was a friend’s residency and she went away for an interstate gig and let me take the slot for the night, certainly a memorable one.
Longest set you’ve ever done?
A couple weeks back I played 7 hours and some DJ friends were tripping about it but I loved it, and I used to do it all the time back when I started. I feel like it was more standard to do that kind of set 15 years ago. I’m happy playing longer -gets to another level I feel. Book me for 7 hours promoters! I’m definitely down.
At the end of this interview, we’re going to drop a mix from you. Why should readers listen? And what kind of person will like it?
Sexy people will like it. If you don’t wanna listen, that’s cool, I get it, maybe wait for a more appropriate time 😉
Look into the future. Give us a prediction for 2024? What kind of stuff is going to happen that we should know about?
Hopefully 7 hour sets in strip clubs. A girl can dream! Also I’m planning on dropping a track called hot yoga, so I envisage all you sexy people listening to that in a sauna with a special friend or two.
