The Balearic Islands Government Are Putting A Limit On Tourism In Ibiza

The iconic Balearic Islands have seen more tourists from not only the EU but everywhere across the globe this year. In saying that, the government of the Balearic Islands have taken it upon themselves to implement a plan that will cap the amount of tourist beds the country sleeps, which is up to 623,624. As the years progress they also look to cut it by 120,000 more. With the Island gaining over 6 million visitors every summer for an Island with a population of 132,000, it’s fairly impressive, to say the least.

The plan for this scheme is to decrease the number of visitors to the Island as the residents have come forward and said the rental prices have been affected. The landlords can be fined up to more than 40,000 euros if they let their apartment available for rent without the correct license. This will not only apply to normal rentals of house/villas but also to the highly popular Air BnB rentals.

The regional Tourism leader Biel Barcelo said: “We want balanced and sustainable tourism so that it can keep being our lead economic activity for many years to come.”

It’s hard to say though, will this all work out the way the government plans it? It’s uncertain.
